nat bartsch trio’s debut record, embracing a love of ECM and Australian jazz

  • In 2007 pianist Nat Bartsch finished her degree in jazz/improvisation at the Victorian College of the Arts, soaking up the tuition and mentorship of Australian jazz piano greats Andrea Keller, Paul Grabowsky and Tony Gould. Nat left her studies with a collection of compositions, and a new trio with fellow emerging artists Josh Holt (double bass) and Leigh Fisher (drums).

In 2008 Nat travelled to Europe to study with two of her idols: ECM pianist/composers Nik Bärtsch (no relation) and Tord Gustavsen. She arrived in Europe armed with her first recording: an EP (turned album, when albums became acceptably 30 mins long!)

Nat’s interest in Bärtsch-style minimalism, and Gustavsen-style spaciousness, is evident throughout this release.
